THE 2017 VIRGINIA MIGRATORY WATERFOWL CONSERVATION STAMP
The 2017 Virginia Migratory Waterfowl Conservation Stamp features a pair of Ring-necked Ducks. The artwork, entitled “Winter Ringbills” is the creation of Virginia artist Guy Crittenden, and is his sixth winning entry in the Virginia competition. Ring-necked ducks, often called “Ringbills” by sportsmen, are small diving ducks that are found wintering in good numbers on ponds and impoundments throughout Virginia. “In this painting, I intended to show some of the beautiful feathering of the species while keeping a realistic and simple composition. These are hardy, cold weather birds, and I wanted to make the water a cool, winter blue. The male Ring-necked duck is distinguished by its handsome head with irridecent purple and beautiful bill markings.
